Charities

The Insurance Charities, based in London, gives financial and practical support to past and present employees of the insurance industry, together with their dependant relatives, who are suffering financial hardship as a result of an element of misfortune.

Full details of eligibility and type of assistance available are given on the Insurance Charities web site www.theinsurancecharities.org.uk but briefly, applications are considered in the following circumstances

  • Where the applicant and/or a dependant relative has spent at least 5 years in the insurance industry ( insurance company, broking or loss adjusting), and where that service has been the major part of their working life. The nature of their employment within the insurance industry is immaterial.
  • Where the applicant's financial resources are limited, both in terms of income and capital, and he/she is unable to finance reasonable needs after taking into account statutory entitlement.
  • Where there has been an element of misfortune contributing to the financial situation e.g. ill health, redundancy, marital breakdown or unemployment.

The Insurance and Actuarial Society of Glasgow has a local Charities Representative who is able to discuss individual applications on behalf of the Insurance Charities. These discussions can be either by a visit to the applicant's home, or if preferable at the initial stage, by telephone. All discussions are in total confidence between the applicant, our representative, and the Charity in London.
