Internet Privacy - some thoughts within the recruitment sector from Hilary Roberts of HR Consultancy ...................................
read article
INTERNET PRIVACY AND RELATED ISSUES
When you have a vacancy to fill in your department, what’s the usual process?
1. Get sign-off from HR?
2. Advertise the role?
3. Wade through the applications?
4. Check potential candidates on Google, Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn?
Since the arrival of social networking sites, people are surprisingly willing to share their thoughts, experiences and details of their lives with millions of strangers worldwide.
When you're an employer looking for candidates, this can be enlightening, not to mention occasionally hilarious. When you’re the candidate, it can mean missing out on a role that might otherwise have been yours.
While there aren't yet any statistics showing exactly what percentage of employers are googling prospective employees, I know of many recruiters who do. We would advise jobseekers to protect their online privacy. When they post on a social networking site, they should be cautious about the information they share. The best way to do this is to check privacy settings and restrict who can see any unfortunate photos or other potential embarrassments. On Twitter, though, everything is public so careful use of the 140 characters is to be advised. If you want to keep it professional, LinkedIn is a good place to start.
As a recruiter, you probably don’t want to rely too heavily on these sites when deciding who to hire. Most of the information will be unrelated to their ability to do the job and we’re all entitled to a life outside of work.
Facebook has been heralded in some quarters as the future for recruitment but I feel this is overstating its value. While social networking sites can be a useful indicator of the personalities and lifestyle choices of your potential candidates, they are no substitute for a thorough recruitment process conducted by an industry professional.

PRESS RELEASE
SEMINAR HIGHLIGHTS IMPORTANCE OF INSURANCE SECTOR TO GLASGOW’S ECONOMY
The importance of the insurance industry to the city of Glasgow was underlined at a seminar held at the Mitchell Library on Tuesday 16th February 2010.
Attended by over 100 representatives from the city’s insurance sector, the event was organised by the Insurance and Actuarial Society of Glasgow (IASG), with support from Glasgow’s International Financial Services District (IFSD).
Statistics unveiled at the seminar confirm that more than five thousand people work in general insurance in and around Glasgow, making it a key component of the city’s economy. The organisers are keen to use this strong foundation to retain and enhance the presence of the insurance industry in Glasgow.
In recent years, the IASG has worked closely with Scottish Enterprise and Glasgow City Council on a range of initiatives including last year’s opening of the Study and Reference Centre at the Mitchell Library, the first such facility in the UK outside London, to support insurance and financial services workers in studying for professional qualifications.
Barry Smith, President, and Sandy Scott, CEO of the London based Chartered Insurance Institute spoke at the seminar.
Mr Smith is also chief executive of Fortis UK, which has a presence in Glasgow’s IFSD. He said, “It is tremendously encouraging that the role of the insurance industry in boosting the city’s economy has been recognised and I am impressed with how Scottish Enterprise and Glasgow City Council have been working together with the IASG on a number of important initiatives over the past few years. We very much look forward to developing these relationships over the years ahead for the benefit of the industry and the city.”
Speaking on behalf of the public sector partners behind Glasgow’s International Financial Services District, Jim Watson, Director of Financial Services, Scottish Enterprise said, “We recognise the significant contribution of the insurance sector to the health and well being of both the Glasgow and Scottish economies and we are committed to working in partnership with the sector to help it maintain and grow its presence here.”
Mr Watson confirmed that Scottish Enterprise has agreed to conduct a major research study on the general insurance sector in Scotland, to help identify new and additional ways the public sector agencies can support the sector to prosper in the future.
Other initiatives where Scottish Enterprise and Glasgow City Council have supported the IASG include work in secondary schools to promote career opportunities in insurance.

IASG Archive Display 2010
|
|
|
IASG has come a long way since its formation in 1881......as we move through the 21st century, it is important that we recognise our past and the contribution that the insurance industry has made to to the development of Glasgow as a major commercial centre within the UK .......

We were recently offered space by our friends at the Mitchell Library for the creation of a display of artefacts and memorabilia selected from IASG's Archives, which date back to 1881.
The initiative supports IASG's on-going mission to create a more visible presence to its 2500 or so members.
IASG and its associates have a long history of supporting the insurance industry in the City, and the development of trade in general dating back to the early 19th century. IASG Council felt it highly appropriate that this be marked in some practical way as we move through the early part of the 21st century.
To create additional interest, we have incorporated material kindly lent to us by custodians of The Glasgow Marine Association whose origins go back even further into Glasgow's history, having been formed in 1818.
The Display is now installed and can be viewed on the ground floor mezzanine area at The Mitchell, adjacent to the IASG's new Study & Reference Centre. Please take a few moments to visit the exhibition when you are next at or near the Library - the display team did a splendid job for us and we know you'll be impressed ... you might also wish to enjoy a tea or coffee at the excellent Herald Cafe during your visit!
